Spring Drone Photography in Connecticut: Timing the Bloom
Spring is one of my two favorite seasons for aerial photography in Connecticut, the other is fall, but the window is short and the conditions move fast. A shoot scheduled even a week off the peak can look noticeably worse than one timed right. Here is how I think about spring timing in CT.
The spring window
Across most of Connecticut, the prime spring drone window runs from roughly late April through mid June. That is when lawns are fully green, trees have leafed out, flowering trees are at peak, and the light is good. Before late April, lawns are still brown and trees are bare. After mid June, the green starts to flatten and the air gets hazier.
The very best two weeks in most years are early to mid May. Spring growth is at its freshest, dogwoods and flowering trees are blooming, and the canopy is full but still has visual variation. Residential listings shot in that window look noticeably better than the same property shot in March or August.
What spring shows that other seasons hide
Mature trees in leaf hide a lot of detail in summer aerials. In spring, while the leaves are still smaller and more varied, you can often see more of a property's hardscape, driveway layout, pool, terraces, and the relationship of the home to the lot. For listings where landscaping is a feature, spring shoots are exceptionally good at showing the work.
Spring is also the best season for flowering trees and gardens. A property with significant landscaping, a Westport center hall colonial with mature azaleas, a Ridgefield estate with dogwoods, a Greenwich back country home with old rhododendrons, shows dramatically better in early to mid May than at any other point in the year.
Watch the weather
Spring weather in Connecticut moves fast. I monitor forecasts for several days before any scheduled spring shoot and will reschedule if conditions are not right. Strong winds, rain, and overcast flat light all hurt aerial photography. The best spring shoots happen on clear, calm mornings, and there are typically only a handful of perfect mornings in the May window.
How to schedule
If you have a listing or a project coming up in spring, the best move is to schedule early and stay flexible on the exact date. I will work with you on timing the flight to peak conditions. Reach out and we can plan around the window.
